For the Love of a Bow- The J.Crew Silk Gala Clutch

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

jcrew_clutch_version2

I’ve caught a bit of “bow” fever lately! You can’t look at fashion right now without seeing some version of a bow, whether on a beautiful dress at the Oscar’s, on shoes, hair jewelry, and this gorgeous silk clutch by J.Crew. The Silk Gala Clutch won my heart when I saw the sumptuous drooping bow made with rich luxurious silk! And look at the fresh, clean, spring colors- you can take the ivory along to your wedding or take the tea rose out to dinner. Why thank you J.Crew, I love it!

I have a few new ideas in still in the beginning stage for bows translated into what else, but hair jewels! For one I’m thinking a loose bow with tails that linger down and wrap the side of a large chignon. It’s a lovely thought right now- I’ll share when it comes to life!

Details to Consider when Selecting Hair Accessories

details2

It’s a most common question “How and when do I choose my hair accessories” and one that deserves careful thought and consideration. However, the condensed answer is simple: Choose what you love while taking a few key factors into consideration.

1.Your gown- it’s a must factor. It’s rare to find a bride who hasn’t already selected her gown. Does it have embellishment? A high or low neck line? Does it have any color in the fabric, or in the detail (a sash maybe or for example gold toned beading)?

2. What jewelry do you have already? You should have an idea of style at least. Stud earrings or dangle (how much dangle, a ½” drop or a fabulous chandelier style)?

3. How will you wear your hair? Your hair…I think most people would agree that you should feel like yourself only a more special, more carefully styled version of yourself, a version that makes you feel beautiful, glamorous, confident, & full of love! This isn’t always a must when selecting a hair accessory, but it does help guide the style you choose. I have actually had many customers who have all the details wrapped up including gown, jewelry, & hair accessory, but they wait on deciding on a final hair style until bringing their beautiful and sparkly jeweled comb to their 1st hair trial.

The above image features the Lisette Gown from J.Crew, a sheer silk organdy fabric covered in embroidered cotton flowers. I paired this gown with two similarly detailed jeweled combs- the Dogwood Small Comb and the larger Dogwood Bridal Back Piece. Keeping the jewelry simple I added only the Dogwood Bracelet and would opt simple pearl studs for the earring choice.

Do you have any questions along the way? I’ve touched base with customers as much as 6 months before they order perhaps just answering simple inquiries such as the possibility changing the size of a piece or location of a comb. Let me know if you have any questions, ideas, or pictures that would help make your decision!

J.Crew Fontaine Gown

With a tightly fitted bodice & layers of ruffled French tulle & satin organza the new Fontaine Gown from J.Crew was the most romantic dress I found this week. Add to that the scooped back & line of buttons leading to the skirt & I was in love. I thought this dress was a perfect match for our new Sylvie headpiece & earrings. Sylvie is shaped to fit around a chignon & is symmetrical on both sides. The Sylvie earrings are a romantic fan of perfect leaves which remind me much of the cascading layers on the dress.

View our new Sylvie Line here. Enjoy & have a beautiful weekend!

J.Crew Mimi Gown

I became “friends” with J.Crew almost 16 years ago. Fresh out of high school & living very frugally while getting my BFA in painting their clothes were all I would ask for for birthday & Christmas gifts. In the present day I visit the J.Crew web site almost everyday to look for new items or to see if a coveted item has maybe gone on sale (right now I’m waiting for the “Jamie Bag” to drop a bit in price). I can’t help it. I love the simple clean lines, the fit, the amazing details, the unexpected prints, the jewelry (I’m wearing the critter charm bracelet right now). So when I got married several years ago I yearned for a J.Crew dress to possibly be a good candidate for a wedding dress. This was before they debuted their well designed & well made wedding dress line. Back then they had one dress “Sophia” a long white silk gown which I considered. I wanted it to work but it was ultimately too informal & after a brief encounter with a strapless Vera Wang ball gown, I settled on a Pronovias. It was a light ivory silk A-line with a triple pleated waist & a lightly beaded boat neck line. I wore various versions of the Magnolia Hair Ornament & Lilac Hair Ornament line in my hair, on my neck & wrist, & even wired to my shoes. Everything was perfect & I wouldn’t change a thing. But if I were to be getting married all over again (to the same man of course!) pictured above is how J.Crew would have changed my look.

The beautiful champagne color of this silk crepe Mimi Gown is my first love, second is the unexpected open back, & third is the inset satin waist. I think when you can “feel” fabric move with you, as this silk crepe certainly must, you have found movement that brings confidence & beauty. I would have paired this dress with a knot of hair at the base of my neck & placed in the side a gold Magnolia Hair Ornament. My large ivory pearl studs were my earring pick years ago & they remain my pick for this dream ensemble.

So there you have it- the dress I dreamed of years ago materialized now in 2008. A few years too late, but none the less, fun to think about & even more fun to write about! Xoxo Jessica
